Speeches I am delighted to be here today and extend my congratulations to all of you who have gathered to celebrate the Tenth Anniversary of the British Chamber of Commerce in Lithuania. Your association can be justly proud of being among the most active foreign chambers of commerce in Lithuania. This is best confirmed by the fact that it presently unites representatives from more than 120 businesses from Great Britain, Lithuania and international enterprises.  Together with you who have lived through the greatest tragedy of the Jewish people, I bow my head before the Holocaust victims. The pain of the Holocaust is also the pain of Lithuania because we lost Lithuanian Jews with whom we had lived together for centuries, suffered together the devastation caused by the occupiers of our land, and together we worked for a more just and more beautiful state. Unfortunately, the historical tradition of our two nations living together in peace was painfully tarnished by those who sold their conscience by collaborating with the Nazis. 2009-04-21 State of the Nation Address by H.  Mr. Speaker of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, Honorable Members of the Seimas Dear Fellow Citizens of Lithuania, This is my last state of the nation address to the people of Lithuania and members of parliament. Next year it will be delivered, as prescribed by the Constitution, by a new head of state in accord with own personal values, principles and viewpoint to Lithuania's present and future life. On many occasions, I have shared with the people of Lithuania my thoughts about the challenges that we face and ways of overcoming them. I had the great honor and responsibility of serving two terms - ten years - as president of independent and democratic Lithuania by the will of its people. It is more than half of almost two decades of our re-independence. Throughout all these years, I spoke and worked as my heart told me to and I performed my duties in compliance with the Constitution, my personal beliefs and for the good of the homeland.  Our two nations share a long history of friendship and cooperation. Since their very establishment, our people have been linked by close and continuous ties. We still remember that six hundred years ago the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas the Great and the Bohemian military commander Jan Žižka together fought and defeated the Teutonic Order in the Battle of Žalgiris (Grunwald). This moment in the history of our two nations has been immortalized in Jan Matejko's painting "The Battle of Grunwald", and its 19th century copy will be displayed here in Prague at the conference of Lithuanian and Czech historians.
