Presidents of Lithuania and Georgia opened Vilnius Square in Tbilisi

Tuesday, June 23, Tbilisi - During his working visit to Georgia, President Valdas Adamkus together with President Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia attended the opening ceremony of Vilnius Square in Tbilisi.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, President Adamkus said that you could find public areas bearing Lithuanian names in Rome, Chicago, New York, Latin America, and also in the freezing depths of Siberia.

"May this decision to name a square after Vilnius become a symbol of a strong Georgia! Strong by its ability in difficult times to care about small day-to-day issues of major long-term significance," Mr. Adamkus said.

He noted that Vilnius Square in Tbilisi had an outstanding neighborhood: the street of Daniel Chonkadze, the founding father of Ossetian literature, and the Mtatsminda Pantheon where the most prominent people of Georgia were buried.

"One simple decision to wed us with this neighborhood has widened our horizons. Hopefully, this marriage will also offer the citizens and guests of Tbilisi many possibilities to learn about Vilnius, Lithuania and its people," Mr. Adamkus said.

He wished the brave, dynamic and vibrant Georgian nation to go on with their dreams of independence, peace and Euro-Atlantic integration.

"You have millions of friends in Lithuania, you have millions of sympathies all over the world," Mr. Adamkus said.

President Saakashvili thanked the President and the people of Lithuania for their support to Georgia in times of great difficulty.

In recognition of the development of friendly relations between Lithuania and Georgia and for support extended to Georgia at international level, President Valdas Adamkus was awarded the Vakhtang Gorgasal Order, first class - one of the highest state decorations in Georgia.

In the evening, President Adamkus will participate in a reception held to celebrate the Millennium of Lithuania and on the occasion of his visit to Georgia.

Valdas Adamkus will return to Vilnius late evening.
