Press ReleasesPresident will seek EU support for energy projects in the European CouncilWednesday, December 10, Vilnius - Tomorrow, December 11, President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus goes on a two-day working visit to Brussels, to join other European leaders for the European Council meeting to discuss such issues as the Economic Recovery Plan, energy and climate change, the Common Agricultural Policy, the Eastern Partnership Policy, and the Lisbon Treaty. Lithuania's Head of State has repeatedly underlined the importance for Lithuania to have the Economic Recovery Plan approved as it envisages the mobilization of additional 5 billion Euros in the EU budget for the development of energy infrastructure. This money would also be used to finance Lithuania's strategic projects such as electricity bridges between Lithuania and Sweden and between Lithuania and Poland. Lithuania's leader believes it is of no less importance that the Council Conclusions expressly mention EU support for the Baltic Links Plan. As regards the climate change and energy package, Lithuania will seek compensation of the burden of higher levels of CO2 emission after closure of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. The President comes back to Vilnius Friday evening.
