President thanked Iceland's leader for support in the past two decades

Tuesday, July 7, Vilnius - President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus received President of Iceland, Mr. Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, who is visiting Lithuania to take part in the celebrations of the Millennium of Lithuania in Vilnius.

The two Heads of States discussed bilateral relations, Baltic-Nordic cooperation, Iceland's prospects of accession to the European Union, global security issues, and relations with neighbouring countries.

Talking about the relations between Baltic and Nordic countries, the Presidents expressed appreciation of the increasingly close regional and people-to-people contacts. According to the Heads of States, the coming of monarchs and heads of states of these countries to Vilnius to commemorate the Millennium of the Name of Lithuania is yet another proof of belonging to one single family, where members not only extend a hand of help to each other in a difficult period of time but also celebrate important state anniversaries together.

Having introduced Iceland's intentions to integrate into the EU, President Grímsson was interested in Lithuania's experience of negotiations for EU membership and of organising a membership referendum.

On the issue of relations with the neighbouring countries, the Presidents exchanged views on the yesterday's meeting between President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, and the U.S.President Barack Obama, and the negotiations between these two states concerning nuclear weapon reduction. The Presidents also discussed the situation in Georgia.

President Adamkus presented to the President of Iceland the candidacy of Ina Marčiulionytė, Lithuania's Ambassador at UNESCO, to the position of UNESCO Director General. Lithuania's leader underlined her candidacy was put forward jointly by the three Baltic states, and asked Iceland for support in the election.

President Adamkus thanked President Grímsson for participating in the commemoration of the Millennium as an expression of solidarity with Lithuania. President Adamkus conveyed his high appreciation that this celebration brought together Baltic and Nordic monarchs and political leaders in Vilnius.

"This is a testimony of unity and strong mutual bonds among our states," President Adamkus said, thanking President Grímsson for Iceland's continued support to our state in the past two decades.

Iceland's leader noted it was symbolic that this important historical event coincided with the expiry of Mr. Adamkus's presidential mandate. "Despite the temporary difficulty suffered by the global economy, Lithuania has made a strong impression of a viable, growing and energetic country. You, as the President of Lithuania, have made a lot to contribute to your country's remarkable progress achieved in such a short period of time, only several decades since the restoration of Independence," Iceland's President said.
