President talked over phone with his Latvian counterpart about the election to the post of UNESCO Director General

Wednesday, June 10, Vilnius - Today President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus had a telephone conversation with the Latvian President Valdis Zatlers.

The Lithuanian and Latvian Presidents discussed the upcoming election to the post of UNESCO Director General and the progress of the election campaign for the joint Baltic candidate, Ina Marčiulionytė.

The Heads of States agreed on the need for the Baltic countries to continue their active cooperation in this Organisation in the run-up for the election to this post at UNESCO.

"UNESCO has made a significant contribution to cherishing and protecting tangible and intangible cultural property and heritage not only of Lithuania but also of other Baltic countries. I have no doubt the Baltic candidate, who is a highly-experienced professional and diplomat, will not only work actively to implement UNESCO's global goals but also come up with ideas for enhancing the role of this Organisation in all continents of the world," President Adamkus said.

The Latvian President agreed that this was a unique opportunity for the Baltic countries and that it must not be missed.
