President received Secretary General of the Council of Europe

Friday, June 12, Vilnius - Today President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus received Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr. Terry Davis.

The Head of State decorated the Secretary General with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas.

In the meeting, President Adamkus expressed his high appreciation of the efforts of the Council of Europe in enforcing and protecting human rights in Europe. The President also noted with regret that situation of fundamental human rights in the eastern neighbourhood of the European Union still left much to be desired.

"We must seek to strengthen much further the principles of human rights protection in the international law to ensure full respect and protection of fundamental rights of all people. Particular focus should be on those who, having suffered from hostilities and aggression, become displaced even in their own homeland. Lithuania is particularly worried about the post-war situation in Georgia," President Adamkus said.

Mr. Terry Davis inquired about Lithuania's ties with the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation and relations with Russia and other neighbouring countries. Concerning Lithuania's role in the Council of Europe, Mr. Davis noted that Lithuania had not ratified yet an important convention of the Council of Europe, the Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings. The Council of Europe's Secretary General expressed hope that Lithuania would ratify this Convention of pan-European importance in the near future.
