President received letters of credence from the Ambassador of the Syrian Arab Republic

Accepting the letters of credence from the Syrian Ambassador to Lithuania, the President underlined that although Lithuanian and Syria had been maintaining diplomatic relations for more than fifteen years now, there was still plenty of room for further action. The President said he hoped the appointment of the new ambassador would provide a new impetus for a more dynamic development of bilateral cultural and economic relations.

"Lithuania's membership in the European Union connects Lithuania and Syria through the Mediterranean dialogue and I am confident Syria's integration into the Union for the Mediterranean will open up new opportunities for a further development of our bilateral relations," the President said.

According to the President, the improving indicators of Lithuanian-Syrian trade suggest that new and promising initiatives can be found in the economic area. "I am confident you consistent and dynamic efforts will encourage our businesspeople to look more actively for new business niches and to explore the two geographically distant states of ours, and that you will not only present Syria in our country but also incite your people's interest in Lithuania's achievements," President Adamkus said during the ceremony.

The President noted that Lithuanian students were interested in the culture of the Middle East and a number of them studied the Arab language and the Islamic religion. "I believe than through a better knowledge of each other's cultures we can bring our countries and people closer together. I am confident we will work together to promote cultural and academic bonds and tourism, and that we will sign at least one bilateral agreement to make our cooperation stronger," the President said.

The President of Lithuania wished the Ambassador every success in discharging his important mission.
