President congratulates President of the Federal Republic of Germany on winning the election

Monday, May 25, Vilnius - President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus sent congratulations on behalf of himself and the people of Lithuania to the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Horst Köhler, on his victory in the presidential election.

The Head of State underlines in the letter of congratulations that another mandate of trust given by the German parliament is a positive evaluation of the first term of office of the re-elected German leader, marked by strong responsibility and dedication to the entrusted mission. "I have no doubt you will remain an important moral authority for your nation which celebrated with great enthusiasm and patriotism the 60th birthday of the Federal Republic a few days ago," the President of Lithuania writes in the letter.

According to President Adamkus, Lithuania and Germany should keep promoting successfully their close political, economic and cultural bonds. The President writes he is confident that only by working together Lithuania and Germany will contribute meaningfully to the creation of a united, open and strong Europe and will cooperate closely in addressing energy security, climate change, economic and other challenges.

"Dear President, please, accept the assurances of my highest esteem. I hope to see you on 6 July in Vilnius, for an official celebration of the Millennium of the First Mention of the Name of Lithuania in Written Sources. Your presence would represent a symbolic memento of the fact that the name of Lithuania was first mentioned in the German Annals of Quedlinburg, and would also be a testimony of Lithuanian-German friendship," the President's letter reads.
