President Adamkus: Many steps important for Europe were made during the Czech Republic's presidency of the European Union

Friday, May 29, Vilnius - President Valdas Adamkus received Mr. Štefan Füle, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.

Among the issues discussed at the meeting were the EU presidency of the Czech Republic, topical initiatives, relations with EU eastern neighbors, and also preparations by the Czech Republic for EU presidency and ensuing experience.

President Adamkus pointed out that it was during the Czech Republic's presidency that the EU Eastern Partnership program was launched and the southern energy corridor summit was held.

"Lithuania supports the EU Eastern Partnership which offers good opportunities to focus even more attention on the countries located in Europe's East: Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Belarus, and to render assistance to their reforms on the path to euro-integration," Mr. Adamkus said.

Štefan Füle said that Lithuania was an important partner of the Czech Republic, adding that close working ties had been maintained with Lithuania and other EU member states during his country's EU presidency.

President Adamkus underlined that throughout the Czech Republic's presidency a lot of focus was also placed on the Baltic energy system and its future interconnection projects, which would help Lithuania and the other Baltic States address their energy security issues more effectively.

Speaking about the EU's external policy, President Adamkus said that the European Union should not only talk to Russia about energy matters, but also maintain a unified and well-coordinated position acceptable to all member states.

Štefan Füle said that his country was prepared to share its experience with Lithuania. He pointed out that Lithuania should start forming a professional team of officials with due focus on their training and begin planning important meetings to be held in Lithuania during its presidency.
