President Adamkus invited major Czech investors to do business in Lithuania

Friday, April 10, Prague - President Valdas Adamkus met with Speaker of the Czech Chamber of Deputies Miloslav Vlček.

President Adamkus expressed his delight at intense cooperation contacts between Lithuania and the Czech Republic, underlining that Lithuania was a strong supporter of the priorities set forth during the Czech EU presidency. It was noted during the meeting that the potential for the development of bilateral relations had not been fully used.

Valdas Adamkus and Miloslav Vlček agreed that the development of bilateral relations was greatly important in the current period of economic difficulties, pointing out that cooperation at parliamentary level would definitely help deal with the crisis. To this end, parliamentary committees for economic, social and financial affairs could contribute in a significant way to resolving the problems that we all face today.

President Adamkus joined corporate leaders of major companies in a business breakfast. He pointed out that economic and financial difficulties made the governments not only review their programs of action, but also encouraged businesses to adjust to new circumstances and search for new markets and fresh market slots.

"I hope that Lithuania's convenient geographic position, valuable human resources of young and experienced people, and good business development options will attract investors from the Czech Republic who continue projecting their businesses in the region despite the global crisis," Mr. Adamkus said.

President Adamkus emphasized that regardless of the economic slowdown, business communities had retained their dynamism and vitality. He invited investors to focus on and visit Lithuania to find new opportunities for their businesses.

The Czech Republic has attracted such global investors as Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Skoda Auto that are adjusting quite successfully to the strenuous economic environment and even plan to expand to other countries.

Czech investors were interested in the counter-crisis measures used by the Government of Lithuania and in Lithuanian business recovery plans. Among the other issues discussed were the euro zone and its mitigating economic affects.
