President Adamkus congratulated Georgia’s leader on Independence Day

Tuesday, May 26, Vilnius - President Valdas Adamkus extended, on behalf of himself and the people of Lithuania, congratulations to President Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia on the occasion of Independence Day.

President Adamkus underlined that it could never be allowed again to erase an internationally recognized state from the world's political map.

"Lithuania will continue to stand firm in support of the state of Georgia, once again free and independent, its stronger presence on the international arena, its territorial integrity and accession to Euro-Atlantic security structures," Mr. Adamkus wrote in his letter of congratulations.

President Adamkus noted that Georgia was going through a difficult period which, however, should help develop a mature democracy, ensure long-term stability and bring all public forces in Georgia together to create national well-being and prosperity.

"I am confident that your country, which has many times demonstrated great wisdom in addressing difficult issues, will find a peaceful and civilized way out of the present situation," Mr. Adamkus wrote. "I would like to assure you that actions directed at establishing a dialogue and strengthening cooperation will always find support from the international community, including Lithuania."

President Adamkus said that he considered the close relationship between Georgia and Lithuania to be a major achievement of his second term of presidency.

He wished Georgia to celebrate Independence day with events that would reflect its most beautiful and meaningful traditions, reveal its past, honor its fellow citizens and dear ones, and demonstrate its awareness of the historic opportunity to create a better tomorrow for its future generations.
