President accepted letters of credence from the Croatian Ambassador

Thursday, May 28, Vilnius - President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus received letters of credence from the Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia, Mr. Vladimir Matek.

Accepting the letters, the President underlined that this year was very special for Croatia as it became a full-fledged member of NATO in April. "It will surely contribute to security and stability in your region and in Europe. I hope that we will welcome you in the European Union this year already," the President said during the ceremony.

According to the President, a number of new bilateral treaties and many official visits have consolidated Croatian-Lithuanian relations in the past few years, thus laying the groundwork for further bilateral cooperation in the fields of economy, culture, science, and education.

President Adamkus expressed hope that further efforts would be made to promote yet moderate bilateral trade, invest in joint business projects, and make the best of the countries' geographical advantages on their way to broader markets.

The Head of State also pointed out that the ever expanding people-to-people contacts could help attain these objectives.

"The natural beauty of Croatia, its unspoilt coastline and beaches are attracting an increasing number of Lithuanian holiday-makers. Our universities exchange students and our readers can enjoy Lithuanian and Croatian works of literature translated into their native languages. I firmly believe that these ties will grow even stronger and that our people will get to know and understand better the rich historical and cultural heritage of our respective countries," President Adamkus said.
