Press ReleasesIn Tbilisi, President Adamkus met with Head of EU Monitoring MissionTuesday, June 23, Tbilisi - President Valdas Adamkus, who is continuing his two-day working visit to Georgia, met with Head of the EU Monitoring Mission Hansjörg Haber. Among the issues discussed at the meeting was the work of Lithuanian representatives of the EU Monitoring Mission and the situation on ground after the United Nations and the OSCE withdrew their missions from Georgia.
Hansjörg Haber spoke highly of the professionalism and expertise of observers from Lithuania working in Georgia.
Mr. Haber expressed regret that the EU Monitoring Mission was the only deployed in Georgia after the withdrawal of the UN and OSCE missions. It was underscored during the meeting that the EU Monitoring Mission was unable to fully perform its duties since its representatives were not allowed into South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
President Adamkus said that, taking into account the current situation, the EU Monitoring Mission was performing very important and significant work.
President Adamkus inquired how long the EU Monitoring Mission would be staying and about the options of stabilizing the situation in Georgia.
In the evening, President Adamkus will end his visit in Tbilisi and return to Vilnius. Press Service of the President |
