Wednesday, July 1, Lublin - Continuing his working visit in Lublin, Poland, which is the venue of the ceremonies of commemoration of the 440th anniversary of the Union of Lublin, a union between Lithuania and Poland formed back in 1569, the President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus accepted an honorary doctoral degree at John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin and the certifying documents and the regalia.

Accepting the degree, the President said he was excited to become a member of the community which is associated with the name of Jurgis Matulaitis-Matulevičius (Jerzy Matulewicz), and which has had, as its members, such prominent personalities as Pope John Paul II, Czesław Miłosz, Helmut Kohl, and many many others.

In the ceremony, the President said he was accepting this award as a commitment to continue working towards stronger Lithuanian-Polish partnership in a Europe built on Christian values.

President underlined the special character of Lithuanian-Polish relations. Noting that the common past of the two states had had both ups and downs, President Adamkus said he was proud that since restoration of Independence both countries had managed to do away with hard feelings of the past that were splitting them apart.

"Eastern Partnership, the European Union's common energy policy, the electricity bridge to connect Lithuania and Poland, the new nuclear power plant, European-type motorways and railways - these are our strategic objectives and projects leading to a more united Europe," the President said.

President Adamkus invited Lithuanian and Polish scholars, intellectuals and public activists to look more energetically for new areas of interaction. The President said he believed the reborn common memory of Lithuania and Poland, the common Lithuanian-Polish historical and cultural heritage would become a perfect platform for new joint endeavours.
