At the Meeting of the European Council, President Adamkus Underlined the Exceptional Circumstances of Lithuania’s Energy Sector

Today President Valdas Adamkus participated in the European Council session where climate change, energy and European economic development were discussed.

President Adamkus underlined that Lithuania supported EU efforts to stop climate change and highlighted Lithuania's exceptional circumstances that should be taken into account in the Presidency Conclusions. Mr. Adamkus pointed out after the closure of the Ignalina nuclear power plant Lithuania would have to enhance its thermo power capacities, which would inevitably result in a significant increase of emitted pollutants.
"Lithuania will need additional carbon dioxide quotas until its electricity system is linked to the European Union power network. This is of vital importance to Lithuania because we have to create the required conditions for Lithuania's industrial and economic development," Mr. Adamkus said.

The European Economic Recovery Plan worked out by the European Commission was discussed later on in the day at the working dinner of heads of EU member states. President Adamkus pointed out that this plan was a greatly important initiative launched by the Commission in the face of economic and social challenges created by the current economic downturn.

President Adamkus further said that to overcome the energy isolation of the Baltic States was not Lithuania's concern only - it was a matter of EU interest. To this end, it was necessary to implement, as fast as possible, the Baltic Interconnection Plan providing it with adequate funding. Therefore, Lithuania supported the Commission's proposal to allocated additional EU funds for the development of energy infrastructure

Tomorrow, the European Council will deliberate the Lisbon Treaty, Eastern Partnership, European Security and Defence Policy, and other issues. Taking part in the meeting of the European Council is also Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius. Press Service of the President
